Playing Catch-up

I’ve got three reviews that are still only half-written and I don’t feel like fetching the books for reference right now, so instead this post will just take stock of what’s left for the last quarter of the year.

I’ve just begun The Mayor of Casterbridge for the Classics Challenge and am still trying to get a feel for what it is about (besides Michael himself, obviously). So far (about 60 pages in) he has shown himself to be a man of both decision and ambition. The nightstand also has waiting Offshore by Penelope Fitzgerald and Dodie Smith’s I Capture the Castle. In some sort of delayed gratification I keep putting off starting the latter, just because I know I’ll love it so much!

Everyone has been posting such tantalizing reviews for the R.I.P IV challenge that it’s putting me in the mood for some spooky/gothic fiction. All the Halloween decorations around aren’t helping either. I’m considering playing along just for October, if I pick short stories or short books. Maybe I’ll pull out my old John Bellairs books; they’re children’s/YA but occult-related evil always gives me the shivers. I’ve only got 13 left for challenges for this year, so certainly I can squeeze a few hundred more pages in…
